Congrats to Johnson & Wales North Miami student Luis Young, 22, who just won the San Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef regional competition with his signature herb scented seared venison tenderloin which impressed judges including Sean Bernal of Oceanaire and Michael Gilligan of Solea. Says a publicist, "Miami culinary students have dominated the regional competition and sent a student to Napa for the past several years." Young, who will have to prepare 200 tasting portions for judges and guests at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone during the three-day competition March 5-8, beat out 7 chefs to secure his spot in the finals. Grand prize? $20,000 in prizes and a paid apprenticeship from one of the participating chef judges. Last year’s winner, David Awad, is currently working at Michael White’s Alto in NYC, which just received a Michelin Star. [EaterWire]
