Mixologists-of-the-moment Elad Zvi and Gabriel Orta have been injecting Miami's cocktail scene with innovation and excitement since they popped up The Broken Shaker last year. The dynamic duo, who have both been in the industry for years now and previously developed the cocktail program at Living Room, now work as the team behind Bar Lab, a beverage consulting service. They've worked with hot new restaurants like South Street Restaurant & Bar and Cooper Avenue to draw up the cocktail menus. As their slogan goes, they "mix shit up" and now they're about to take it a step further with the soon-to-open permanent Broken Shaker at The Freehand Miami Beach. Eater was able to get a quick moment with the guys who are busy preparing for the opening to talk drinks and mixing shit up.
How would you guys describe your approach to mixology?
Gabe: Fun, creative, local, fresh
What trends in drinks are you really into right now?
Elad: Homemade flavored vinegar, umami, and local fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. We have a herb garden at Broken Shaker, and we will be using fresh herbs for the drinks.
What trends are you over?
G: Bad attitudes and "serious" bartenders. No one is having fun anymore!
E: We want to bring that back at Broken Shaker with a fun and relaxed vibe.
Where do you see Miami's cocktail scene going in the next year?
G: It's so exciting to be part of the Miami cocktail culture, and - call us crazy - but Miami's top bartenders could compete with anyone in the world!!
What places do you think are doing drinks well? Where do you like to go for a good cocktail?
E: Blackbird Ordinary and South Street, for sure.
When do you expect to open Broken Shaker?
G: Sometime in December!
