Monday's James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef, a category which incidentally includes Miami's only shot at an award with nominee Hedy Goldsmith from MGFD, has been declared too tough to call by Esquire writer and critic John Mariani. He writes, "Not one person on this list — sadly the only one with a reasonable number of women — is well-known enough to stir strong feelings as a standard-bearer with national impact."
Mariani goes on about the Florida hate, "it's ridiculous that Florida so rarely gets anyone on this (South) regional list, despite its having so many terrific chefs." Agreed, but our money is still on Hedy.
