Coconut Grove's upscale French-American restaurant Villa Mayfair, which opened just last December, is closed for the time being according to its website (via Lee Klein of Short Order). Its chef Frederic Joulin has credentials to spare and the place got mostly solid reviews, but Klein wonders if perhaps they will be retooling the concept over the next few months. After all it is a surprising move to close the place after less than a year in business, even if it is the slow summer season. Klein wonders if Coconut Grove can support anything remotely upscale. Maybe they just need to tone down what Miami Herald critic Jodi Mailander Farrell called the "Euro-cheese factor."
