Welcome, Mina's Mediterraneo, the Upper East Side's newest addition, which is opening up tonight. Mina's is the brainchild of Yasmine Kotb, an Egypt native, who grew up in Texas. When asked why she decided to open up Mina's, Kotb told us that food's always been a part of her culture (her parents even own a restaurant – Mediterraneo – in Texas) and she grew up around family with a massive passion for cooking - the type that talks about their next meal while they are eating.
As far as what the spot serves, Kotb rounds it off to Mediterranean, but describes a blend of cuisines from all over, asking us not to simplify this cuisine to just Greek. The dishes served then, represent many countries including France, Italy, Morocco, Spain and Israel. Kotb also notes that the food is very traditional, adding that all the recipes come from her mom, Sonia Kotb, who just happens to be the chef.
Where interior is concerned though, Kotb wanted to forgo the typical white and blue décor found at other Mediterranean spots and go modern, adding design elements she picked up from her many travels around the world. The result is something her PR gal describes as "Modern Industrial". They also have a huge outdoor section, which has a fresh herb garden and they also plan to eventually turn into outside seating.
Mina's Mediterraneo opens tonight at 5 p.m. They will also have a Happy Hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Tomorrow, when things are officially up and running, and from now on, they will be open for lunch (from 12 to 4 p.m.) and dinner (from 4 to 11 p.m.). Sundays they close one hour earlier, at 10 a.m. Breakfast will roll out sometime in the future.
