Fireman Derek's Pies officially opened its brick and mortar storefront yesterday to the public. According to owner and chef Derek Kaplan, it currently is serving 4 to 5 different types of pies sold by either the slice or by the pie, cookies, pie shakes (which are exactly what they sound like -- a slice of pie blended into a shake) made with Azucar Ice Cream, Panther cold brew coffee and espresso.
Pie flavors rotate depending on seasonality and availability, but favorites such as the Key Lime Pie and Salted Caramel "Crack" Pie will always be on the menu. In August, Kaplan says it will begin serving complete breakfast and lunch will soon follow in the Fall.
Its food truck that started it all will be still utilized for catering and delivery, but Kaplan tells us, its appearances at food truck events will be few and far between. The restaurant is open six days a week at 2818 North Miami Avenue.
