In honor of this week's relaunch of Eater sister site Curbed, take a moment to check out mega chef Michael Schwartz's home kitchen. Not only is Schwartz the restaurateur behind Michael's Genuine Food & Drink, Harry's Pizzeria and Cypress Tavern, but he's also a James Beard Award winner and cookbook author. Here, take a spin around this newly revamped beaut.
- Schwartz might be busy running his restaurant empire, but says he still has the chance to cook at home 3-4 times a week.
- "You can tell by the copper pots it's a working kitchen," Schwartz adds.
- The kitchen space just spent a year being renovated, being moved from one side of the house to another. The old kitchen now serves as an art studio.
- Schwartz purposely used appliances meant for home kitchens — not commercial grade items — like this stove.
- The one caveat to that rule was this custom made rotisserie and wood grill, which serves as the centerpiece of the kitchen.
- The grill raises and lowers as need be depending on what's being cooked.
- By using this handy wheel.
- A well stocked bar is also a must for any chef.
- Along with a top notch espresso maker.
- All the cabinets are open, giving the space an airy feel.
- Sprawling accordion glass doors emphasis the outdoors. "The home is very much about bringing the outside in," says Schwartz.
- The backyard has two gardens that grows everything from herbs to lettuces to tomatoes.
- By the way, the cat is a big fan of the tomatoes.
- When cooking at home Schwartz likes to keep it, "real simple with great proteins, vegetables, salad, and condiments." Pictured here is a wood-fired pizza in the making.
- Out by his pool Schwartz has not one but two Lynx appliances. One is dedicated to pizzas, one to grilling.
- To answer your question, yes he uses the same ingredients at home as he does at his pizzeria, Harry's.
- Pizzas go in looking like this....
- ....and come out just a few minutes later like this. Voilà.
