In the past few years Barley, an American Brasserie, has had more incarnations than it probably cares to count. First was Barley & Swine, a pork-centric eatery that faced its fair share of faulty construction problems; followed by Barley & Wich, a craft sandwich shop; then back to a full-fledged restaurant with the first version of Barley, an American Brasserie, before the space finally shuttered due to issues with its landlord.
But alas, not all was lost, since Barley has found a new home, which officially opens to the public today inside Downtown Dadeland at 8945 SW 72nd Place.
The new space is larger and considerably sleeker than its predecessor. Boasting almost double the seating, up to 105 seats from its previous 60, it features an industrial setting complete lighting made from old bicycle wheels, vintage jet plane pieces affixed from the wall, neon signs and artwork by Fort Lauderdale based street artist, Wall Street.
"It feels like we grew up a little bit," its executive chef and co-owner, Jorgie Ramos, notes.
The menu keeps in line with its previous version, featuring gastropub fare with Latin and Asian touches. Many of the favorites that Barley once served like the nightly mac & cheese rotation and bone marrow have stayed put, but the new menu has also incorporated some lighter elements such as a raw bar into the mix, with a heavy emphasis on using products from local farmers.
The newly-introduced bar program (the previous version only had a beer and liquor license) has been created by FINKA alum, Luis Castro. The menu features rotating cocktails on draft, a variety of classic and not-so-classic libations, plus a "dealer’s choice" option where guests can pick their spirit and their flavor profile and have a drink made on the spot. A selection of craft beers and wines round out the menu.
Barley, and American Brasserie is now open Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., with weekend brunch in the works.
