Lutum, the latest concept by El Grito partners Washington Charles and Antar Sosa, officially opens in Sunset Harbour tonight. Housed right next door to their mezcal speakeasy, the restaurant aims to serve a menu of food and drinks that reflect its neighborhood and South Florida.
Running the kitchen is former chef de cuisine of Michelle Bernstein’s Cena, Michael Mayta. The cuisine at Lutum feautres a little bit of everything, from a falafel covered Scotch egg and a "Jalea" inspired shrimp toast with crispy yuca to corn agnolotti with lima beans and roasted tomatoes and watermelon panzanella with crispy grits and a sherry-bacon vinaigrette, it was purposely diverse to represent the many cultures in the area.
The space itself holds up to 85 guests, with a private room that can seat up to eight people. It was designed in hopes of bringing the name of the restaurant to life — which means dirt and soil in Latin — meaning it features plenty of dark and earthy colors and textures, plants hanging from the ceiling, and a custom made back bar made by a local carpenter.
Lutum is now open for dinner Tuesday to Thursday from 6 p.m. to midnight; Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.; and Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight. Happy hour will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday. Call 786- 773-3149 for more info.
