Former wide receiver and South Florida native Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson left a $1,000 tip on a $37 bill at Havana’s Cuban Cuisine (8600 Griffin Road) in Cooper City on Monday, May 18 — the day restaurants throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties could officially begin reopening their restaurants for in-room dining after being closed for nearly two months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On the tab, which Johnson tweeted out a photo of, he wrote a note saying “Congrats on the re-opening, sorry about the pandemic, hope this helps. ‘I love you.’” The tweet that accompanied the photo was caption with the bible verse Proverbs 11:25 which reads, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
The restaurant took to their social media later in the day thanking the NFL star saying, “We would like to thank Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson for his continued patronage. We greatly appreciate your generosity to our employees now during these most difficult times. Many blessings to you and your family. Thank you again!”
Johnson has been known for giving extravagant tips in the past. In 2019 he gave Austin eatery Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken a $540 tip for a $38 order of fried chicken and a $276 tip on a $91 bill at an unidentified restaurant explaining on the receipt that he “only had 276 yards with the Patriots which was really horrible.” All these receipts were captioned with the same Proverbs 11:25 bible verse when posted on social media.
