The neighborhood of MiMo has a new bar pretending to be old called Don’s 5 Star Dive Bar, from the team behind local favorites like LoKal, Kush, and Vicky’s House, which is a playful homage to Miami’s most loved “Dons” of the 1970s and 80s.
Taking over a 1,000-square-foot space inside the Selina Gold Dust Motel, located “underground,” below the French-style restaurant, Cafe Kush, the lounge is decked out in nostalgia-inducing tchotchkes. Guests can expect tributes to Miami’s Dons including themed bathrooms, complete with a life-size Don Johnson plastered on each stall; a recreation of the Don Shula Expressway sign; and a portrait of Donna Shalala. The entire lounge is cast in a soft red light from a neon sign that reads “Yo Amo Miami,” while a Don Bailey Carpeting sign — apparently gifted from the man himself — spans the entire back wall, with vintage banquettes and arm chairs beneath it.
The menu is filled with dive bar classics like the screwdriver and Tom Collins, while also keeping with the Don theme serving beverages like the Sabado Gigante, inspired by Don Francisco, made with Ford’s Gin, St. Germaine and hibiscus; King of Carpets, a nod to Don Bailey, with Skyy Citrus, blackberry, and ginger beer; and the Don’t F*ck With Don Shula created with mezcal, Campari, and vermouth. Also on tap is a list of local craft beers, wine, and several shot combinations. Plus, guests who can prove their name is Don, Dawn, and Donna will receive one free shot served in a neoprene bong.
For food, the menu goes the simple route offering just two options: a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a bag of chips and miniature candy served in a vintage lunch box or French onion dip with kettle chips. Complimentary popcorn is also available to all guests.
Don’s 5 Star Dive Bar is located inside the Selina Gold Dust Motel at 7700 Biscayne Boulevard, and is open from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings with plans to open nightly in the coming months. For more information call 305-985-4764.
